Boyfriend, 24, and his NHS nurse girlfriend, 22, die in horror crash after Audi smashed into a tree and burst into flames – as mourners lay floral tributes at scene

A boyfriend and his NHS nurse girlfriend have died after their Audi smashed into a tree and burst into flames.

Jack Nunn, 24, and Hannah Elsworth, 22, had dropped off friends just minutes before the crash on Huddersfield Road, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, after 1am.

A relative has said Ms Elsworth was a nurse at Barnsley Hospital, while Mr Nunn is understood to be co-owner of business JJ tyres.

Mr Nunn lives just 980 feet from the scene of the crash.

The car, believed to be a white Audi, left the road and smashed into a large road-side tree, which this morning had bark split off and showed signs of scorching.

Neighbours woken by the loud crash and fire rushed out of their homes and tried to douse the flames with buckets of water.

Family members hugged one another at the base of the tree where their loved ones died.

Mourners laid floral tributes.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: ‘We received a report at around 1am (Sunday 21 June 2020) of a collision on Huddersfield Road, Barnsley.

‘It is reported that a car had collided with a tree. Police and emergency services attended.

‘Both the driver and the passenger were sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. Enquiries continue.’

The A635 Huddersfield Road was closed in both directions between Westbourne Grove and High Balk until 1pm today while police carried out inquiries at the scene.
