Ricky Gervais admits his life ‘hasn’t changed’ during lockdown because he’s a homebody

Ricky Gervais has revealed that his life ‘hasn’t changed’ much since the global COVID-19 lockdown was implemented, because he’s always been a homebody.

However, the 58-year-old comedian admitted that his writer wife of 36 years, Jane Fallon, is not as excited about his constant presence at their UK home.

Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show via video link, the star said: ‘Honestly, I never went out much. I didn’t like people coming to the house, so that’s good.’

Business as usual: Ricky Gervais has revealed that his life ‘hasn’t changed’ much since the global COVID-19 lockdown was implemented, because he’s always been a homebody

‘This house was an eight-bedroom house when we bought, but I had them all knocked into one bedroom so family couldn’t stay,’ he jokingly continued.

‘I’ve always got enough booze for a nuclear winter. By 6pm, I’ve always on the couch with a bottle of wine watching Netflix. So evenings literally haven’t changed for me.’

Putting the jokes aside for a moment, he added: ‘On a serious note, you won’t hear me complain, not when there’s nurses doing 14-hour shifts. They’re asking us to stay at home and watch telly. That’s alright, I can handle that.’

However, Ricky admitted that his 59-year-old wife Jane is struggling to adjust to having a lot less peace and quiet in the house, where she normally writes.

‘You’d think that she’d absolutely love it, wouldn’t you?’ Ricky said to titular host Ellen DeGeneres. ‘You get to spend a lot more time with Ricky Gervais. But no!’

He explained: ‘Funnily enough, she’s a novelist and she’s usually got the house to herself because I’ve got a little office down the road where I go for meetings and I write and all that. So now I’m home all the time.

‘I’ve never heard this so much; she keeps going, “Shush, let me just finish this sentence, I’ll play with you later”.

‘I found an old badminton set, I put that up in the garden. We’ve even got the chalk off Amazon, I’ve got a badminton court, so I try and make her play at least four or five times a day. She’s not enjoying it as much as me.’

Last month, the British funnyman joked about getting gout during lockdown as he shared After Life series two bloopers.

He took to Twitter to post a live video, where he revealed his foot has started hurting ‘on the top and bottom’ and admitted it might be due to his love of wine.

Ricky revealed that he had previously been tested for gout and was told by doctors that he had ‘pre-gout’ with a high level of urea in his blood.

Ricky also admitted that he doesn’t really eat rich foods, although he added: ‘Salty food and wine, wine innit really, that’s my only vice now.’

The After Life creator, who recently released the second season of the comedy show, went live on Twitter to talk to fans after releasing a blooper video.

Ricky said: ‘I like it when people make their own clips of bloopers from the show.’

He then went on to ask his viewers to watch the blooper video he released before jokingly clarifying that he didn’t care if they watched it as long as they retweeted it.

In the blooper video, some behind-the-scenes moments are revealed, including three hilarious interactions between Gervais and Anti the dog, who plays his character’s canine companion Brandy.

The hilarious clip was released two days after Ricky confirmed After Life has been commissioned for a third series.

He delighted fans as he took to Twitter last month to make the announcement.

Speaking about the show, he wrote: ‘Because so many of you watched #AfterLife2 so quickly and made it Number 1 again, the nice people at @Netflix have suggested that I get off my fat a*** and do another season. This is all your fault.’
