Greggs to reopen 800 stores from tomorrow

Greggs to reopen 800 stores from tomorrow and its remaining 1,000 sites by early July

Greggs is to reopen around 800 stores from tomorrow – and will be welcoming sausage roll fans to the remaining 1,000 sites by early July.

New-look outlets will feature floor markings, protective clothes for staff and screens to protect against coronavirus spreading.

There will be a reduced menu to ensure social distancing in kitchens and workspaces.

Sales are likely to remain subdued as the chain copes with fewer customers in stores, following a series of small-scale trials.

The Newcastle-based business is keen to avoid any rushes or overcrowding.

Rivals KFC and McDonald’s have seen long car queues for services and non-essential retailers faced huge queues, as stores reopened on Monday.

Greggs could have stayed open in the lockdown but bosses felt it would compromise staff safety.

The company said: ‘We have limited our initial product range to our best sellers and a number of our manufacturing operational teams will remain furloughed until demand reaches a level that justifies the addition of remaining product lines.’
