Evanescence singer Amy Lee has hardly aged day in almost 17 years

Evanescence singer Amy Lee has hardly aged a day almost 17 years after the band’s debut album Fallen – as she makes a rare Australian TV appearance

Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee rose to fame in 2003 when the alternative rock band released its breakthrough album, Fallen.

And it seems the American singer, who was once a pin-up for the ‘Myspace goth’ generation, has hardly aged a day in the past 17 years.

Amy, 38, made a rare breakfast TV appearance on the Today show on Wednesday, swapping her signature emo look for a more laid-back style.

Amy said her sudden rise to fame in her early twenties had taken her by surprise, after Evanescence’s debut LP topped the charts around the world.

‘That cover of Fallen was [taken on] my 21st birthday, the day that we did that photo shoot and I had only been out of high school for two years,’ she said.

She added that the band’s success was surreal, saying: ‘To see our music video on MTV and to have it not be like a fluke that it played one time. It was really happening.’

Evanescence was formed in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1995. The band released a number of independent albums before Fallen in 2003.

Fallen spent almost a year on the Billboard top 10 and was certified seven times Platinum in the United States.

The album, which spawned hits My Immortal, Bring Me to Life, and Going Under, sold 17 million copies worldwide and was particularly popular in Australia.

Amy told Today’s entertainment reporter Brooke Boney she wished she had appreciated the group’s early success more at the time.

‘I had a lot of appreciation for that stuff now. But in the moment, it’s not that I didn’t appreciate it, but it was hard to focus on it and live in the moment,’ she said.

Evanescence has just released the single Wasted On You, from its forthcoming album, The Bitter Truth.

Explaining how Wasted On You came about, Amy said: ‘I was procrastinating on lyrics to a song I was supposed to be working on in my own head and wrote that song on New Year’s Eve.

‘When we got together as a band, everyone liked it a lot. And we finished it together and went back over it,’ she said.

When asked how her music had evolved since 2003, Amy said the band had always made an effort to keep its sound fresh.

‘We have evolved in a lot of ways. More than anything, we’ve had a lot of experience. Played a ton of live shows,’ she said.
