Beano stalwart Dennis the Menace to teach kids about cash

Dennis the Menace and other comic strip characters to help teach children about money in a schools programme

Thumbs up: Dennis and his pet dog Gnasher

Dennis the Menace and other comic strip characters will help teach children about money and the economy under a schools programme.

The ‘Money and Me’ scheme is being launched by the Bank of England next month and will be taught to primary pupils aged five to 11.

It has been designed with help from children’s publisher Beano and Tes, formerly known as the Times Educational Supplement.

As part of the personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum, children will receive 12 lessons about financial concepts that aim to give them the skills to effectively manage money in the future.

The resources used in the lessons will feature Beano characters such as Dennis and his pet dog Gnasher.

Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said: ‘Financial literacy is essential for everyone.

‘We are delighted to partner with Beano and Tes on the new Money and Me resource. It will support teachers in giving young people a strong sense of the importance of economic and financial decisions from an early age.’

Beano Studios boss Emma Scott said: ‘Beano has been engaging children for more than 80 years, and we love bringing that experience to the classroom.’
