The vehicle did not stop, with police pursuing the car for around four miles until the collision, which happened at around 5.30pm in the Lofthouse Gate area.

The victim was hit at such a pace that he was launched into a garden, with neither the driver of the Peugeot nor the police realising he had be struck down.

It was only when a neighbour revealed that there was a dead body in her garden that the police understood the full extent of the incident.

A Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service was summoned to the scene but it was not required.
