The pet owner, who remains anonymous, said that he came up with the idea after the city issued a mandatory rule, ordering all e-bikers wear helmets.

‘Now the new law is coming out. [We would be] fined without wearing a helmet,’ the male resident told Zhejiang Television.

‘So, I bought a helmet for myself and made a ‘helmet’ for the dog,’ he added.

The regulation passed by Zhejiang officials will take effect from July 1. Residents who break the rule can be fined up to 50 yuan (£5.6).

It comes after China’s Ministry of Public Security has launched the campaign ‘one helmet, one belt’ in a bid to protect citizens on the road.

The trending video has amassed nearly four million views since being uploaded by the local media on Saturday.

One commenter wrote: ‘Hahaha this is way too cute!’

Another one said: ‘So adorable! The puppy can also use the bowl for food haha!’

It comes as China’s new helmet campaign has driven tens of millions of scooter riders into a frenzy as the market price for the safety headgears skyrocketed since the rule was announced in late April.

Chinese media reported that bike helmets were sold for 30 yuan (£3.3) before April. By the end of May, the average price shot to 298 yuan (£33.1).

‘Helmet price increased’ also became a trending topic on Chinese Twitter-like Weibo.
