Big Brother host Sonia Kruger reveals why she never tried her luck in Hollywood after starring in Baz Luhrmann’s hit film Strictly Ballroom

Sonia Kruger had a starring role as Tina Sparkle in Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 hit film, Strictly Ballroom.

And now the 54-year-old has revealed why she never pursed an acting career after the role of a lifetime.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph this week, Sonia said that she was offered an opportunity in Los Angeles after the movie, but didn’t follow through because she was a ‘terrible actress.’

‘I was in my element as far as the dancing was concerned, but I was with Bill Hunter and Gia Carides and all of these legit actors and I was just pretending, I had no idea. I didn’t have the confidence,’ Sonia said.

She added: ‘It’s that sliding doors thing for me, what would have happened if I went down that path?’

Since her days as Tina Sparkle, Sonia has gone on to forge a successful career as one of Australia’s most recognisable TV presenters.

She has hosted shows including Dancing With The Stars, Today Extra and The Voice Australia.

Although she is busy as the host of Big Brother, Sonia said she would be open to acting again, but only if it was a ‘mockumentary’ about the TV industry.

The former Today Extra host, who moved to Channel Seven late last year, is set to host the reboot of Big Brother – which will premiere next week.

She told WHO magazine last month that the show needed a contemporary update from what fans remembered 20 years ago.

‘Twenty years ago we would watch a housemate make a sandwich in the kitchen, and we thought that was amazing. But times have changed and our viewing habits have become more sophisticated,’ she explained.

‘We [the public] want an outcome every episode. We want a really strong hook for the next night, and this series has got all of that in spades.’

The new season of Big Brother was pre-recorded at a custom-built compound in Sydney’s Manly earlier this year.

Seven executives are hoping the rebooted series is a ratings smash after spending millions on rights to the Big Brother name and format.

Big Brother premieres on Seven from 7.30pm on Monday, June 8.
