Sony postpones first event showcasing PlayStation 5 games amid George Floyd protests, saying it wants ‘more important voices to be heard’

  • Sony will postpone its game showcase as the US erupts in protests
  • The company hasn’t named a re-scheduled date for the showcase
  • An event was slated to be held digitally this week
  • The company isn’t expected to reveal any further details on the console

Sony is rescheduling its first ever showcase of games that are slated to appear on its next-generation PlayStation 5 amid protests and police violence across the US.

‘While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration,’ said Sony in a tweet.

‘And for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard.’

While the company didn’t specify beyond its statement, the decision is almost surely in response to the eruption of widespread turmoil resulting from the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.

The decision mirrors similar postponements from EA which decided to delay an event showcasing Madden 12. Google also delayed an event meant to showcase its Android 12 beta.

Sony had previously announced that it would hold an event revealing major game titles this week, offering a ‘first look at the games you’ll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday.’

The event was set to take place digitally on Thursday June 4 at 4pm ET in the US and was slated to run for a little more than an hour according to Sony.

‘The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe. Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware,’ said CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan in a statement last week.

‘This digital showcase will run for a bit more than an hour and, for the first time, we will all be together virtually experiencing the excitement together.’

While Sony plans on showcasing games that will appear on the PlayStation 5, it isn’t expected to reveal any more details about the console.

Sony has revealed little about how it’s next-gen console will actually look aside from its new ‘DusaSense’ controller (pictured)

Despite being slated for release in ‘holiday 2020’ Sony has yet to reveal exactly what the PlayStation 5 will look like.

So far, Sony has revealed details about its upcoming controller as well as a logo but has been stingy when it comes to the actual look and feel of the system.

The company is expected to release more details in the next several months.

‘This is part of our series of PS5 updates and, rest assured, after next week’s showcase, we will still have much to share with you,’ Ryan said in a statement.
