Killing Eve fans are ‘floored’ by season finale that ended on an emotional final scene

Killing Eve viewers were left ‘in tears’ following an emotional series finale that saw Eve and Villanelle decide to ‘walk away’ from each other.

The ‘will-they-won’t-they’ storyline that dominated the plot of this series appeared to come to an end when Villanelle (Jodie Comer) and Eve (Sandra Oh) stood back-to-back on London Bridge and agreed to walk away and ‘never look back’.

However in the final moments of the episode both Villanelle and Eve turned back around to look at each other – suggesting the two characters might end up together.

The promise of a future relationship delighted fans, who begged for the next series – which has already been confirmed – to start with the two characters together.

Others praised the emotional vulnerability of the moment, with one tweeting: ‘Imagine what Villanelle was thinking in that moment before turning around knowing that her whole life all she’s known is rejection from everyone she’s loved and STILL she took a chance and had hope that she’d be proven wrong…and for once, she was.’

Another added: ‘This scene gave me hope. They didn’t keep walking, they both stopped. They both turned around. They can’t leave.’

A third wrote: ‘Unpopular opinion but that was better than a kiss.’

The episode tied up loose ends of the series, including revealing Konstantin as Kenny’s apparent killer. Security footage showed Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) arriving at the office and meeting with Kenny (Sean Delaney) hours before his death.

Armed with the footage, Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) confronted Konstantin, with Paul (Steve Pemberton), Eve and Villanelle also in attendance.

She came close to killing Konstantin but instead killed Paul, who was working for both MI6 and The Twelve.

Konstantin, who had planned to leave to Cuba, left but Villanelle decided not to follow.

The episode also saw Villanelle being rejected by Carolyn after she said she was ready to become an MI6 agent. Carolyn responded: ‘What use are you to me… to anyone?,’ referring to the assassin’s desire not to kill any more.

Eve admitted: ‘When I try and think of my future, I just see your face over and over again.’ In response Villanelle wondered if she has ruined Eve’s life and asks if she thinks she is a monster.

Eve asked for Villanelle’s help to ‘make it stop’, referring to the way she can’t stop thinking about the assassin. In response, Villanelle told Eve to stand back-to-back with her and walk away.

Both women were seen with tears in their eyes before turning back to look at each other with a smile.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the way the series ended, producer Sally Woodward Gentle said the decision was taken not to fall into the trap of more violence.

‘I think that what was really appealing was for both of them to have an honest conversation, which we rarely see — particularly with the revelation in the earlier scene that they were both complicit in somebody else’s death,’ she said.

‘And also, for Eve to say, ‘You’ve got to release me. I can’t stop thinking about you.’ And for Villanelle to say, ‘Well, it’s really easy. You just walk away.’ They walk away and Eve turns around with Villanelle, and I think what you see in her is she knows that Eve is going to turn around.

‘She knows that Eve is going to be looking back at her. Is that point-scoring, or is it actually something much more fundamental than that?’
