‘A sick metaphor for 2020’: MasterChef fans heartbroken for eliminated Jess Liemantara who weeps uncontrollably as she’s unable to hug fellow contestants goodbye due to social distancing rules

On Sunday’s episode of MasterChef Australia: Back to Win, Jess Liemantara was eliminated after her Shiraz berry sorbet failed to meet the challenge brief. 

And the 22-year-old was left sobbing uncontrollably as she said her goodbyes to her fellow contestants, who she was unable to hug due to social distancing regulations. 

The departing chef is normally collected in a group hug, as well as individual embraces, but instead, her friends in the competition stood crying in single file as she waved them off one by one.

Even the judges were forced to give Jess no more than an affectionate elbow bump before she departed. 

Fans at home were heartbroken by the sad sign of the times, with many taking to Twitter to express how upsetting the scene was. 

One person wrote: ‘My heart is broken for Jess and stupid COVID-19 for not allowing her the hug she at least deserves’.

Someone else agreed: ‘Jess’ elimination already had me choked up but then the agony of no one being able to comfort her…’ 

Another added:  ‘What makes it even more sad is that no one could even hug Jess before she left’. 

One person watching at home Tweeted: ‘All of the contestants standing apart crying individually and watching Jess leave is some sort of sick metaphor for 2020’.

Yet another upset fan wrote: ‘Watching everyone not being able to hug Jess absolutely broke me! I was sobbing like a baby’. 

Another disappointed viewer chimed in: ‘Jess was THE most talented cook on the show. I’m absolutely devastated’.  

As she departed, Jess broke down repeatedly as she told the judges: ‘I’m devastated that I’ve only made it halfway through the competition. But I’m thankful to all of you guys. And I’m gonna miss you so much.’
