Greg James’ wife Bella Mackie has revealed she suffered a miscarriage which caused her mental health to ‘plummet’.

Bella, 35, who suffers from anxiety and OCD, admitted she is ‘terrified’ at the prospect of trying for another baby.

In an essay for The Times, she wrote: ‘It was a surprise and only lasted for about three weeks; it could barely be called a miscarriage. But even in that brief window my mental health plummeted dramatically.

‘I started having constant intrusive thoughts, my OCD roared back and I couldn’t stop crying. The intensity and speed of my deterioration shocked me. And my poor husband.’

When the initial trauma of the miscarriage had passed, Bella admitted the idea of trying for another baby was no longer warm or fuzzy, but terrifying. 

She wrote: ‘The baby thought remains vague. I am still terrified of the possibility that I might slide back down the treacherous slope and end up losing my independence, or being resentful about what I’ve lost.’

Bella added that she is mulling over trying for a baby again and what positive safeguards she can put it in place if she and Greg, 34, do decide to try for another.

Greg and Bella became engaged in June 2018 after the writer popped the question to the radio DJ.

Greg previously shared a snap of the couple’s wedding day in September of that year to Instagram and wrote: ‘Bella and I got married and it was the most incredible day of my life. 

‘I think it was up there for her too. She is the best thing ever and I feel like I might actually burst with happiness’. 

Greg announced the engagement news just a day after it was confirmed he would replace Nick Grimshaw has host of Radio 1’s Breakfast Show.

He wrote: ‘Oh while we’re doing announcements, here’s something else…I’m having the time of my life and enjoying my work more than ever.

‘I feel really content and it’s nice to have my s**t together before I undertake a huge new work challenge. One of the main reasons for this happiness is because I met this person. This is Bella and in February she asked me to marry her.  

‘I said yes immediately because she is the smartest, funniest and most beautiful person I’ve ever met.

‘The only problem is she loves staying up into the early hours drinking as much as I do and this is not conducive with 5am alarms. That said, it’s been quite a year.’
