Zack Snyder’s long overdue cut of Justice League is coming to HBO Max in 2021

Justice League fans are finally getting a version of the film created by original director Zack Snyder.

DC junkies have been pining for the ‘Snyder cut’ of the 2017 movie ever since he had to step aside from the film during post-production, leaving the Joss Whedon to tie up the loose ends.

The filmmaker announced he would be teaming up with HBO Max to produce his vision of the superhero film during a Wednesday Q&A after an online screening of his Superman feature Man Of Steel.

Long time coming: The Zack Snyder version of Justice League will be coming to HBO Max in 2021

Though Snyder completed a majority of the film – which featured an all-star cast of Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller – he had to step aside due to a family tragedy.

Warner Bros. enlisted Avengers talent Joss Whedon to finish the film, but the blend of his and Snyder’s styles left fans unsatisfied.

The movie was also a box-office dud by superhero standards, losing the studio $60million.

Ever since its 2017 release fans have been campaigning to see Snyder’s vision realized, largely by using the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut on Twitter.

The idea got another surge of support in November 2019 when Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot tweeted the hashtag with a black and white still from Justice League

Snyder is now reassembling the majority of his original post-production team to score, cut, add new and finish old visual effects. It’s also possible that the stars of the film could return to record fresh dialogue as well.

HBO Max isn’t being stingy with the project, which has a budget somewhere between $20million and $30million, according to insiders who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter.

Snyder is promising something completely unlike the 2017 iteration, telling THR: ‘It will be an entirely new thing, and, especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experience apart from that movie.’

‘You probably saw a fourth of what I did,’ he explained, also noting he’s never watched the theatrical release of the movie.

He also promised more nuanced character development, telling the industry rag: ‘What’s so lovely about this is that we get to explore these characters in ways that you’re not able to in a shorter theatrical version.’

It’s unclear whether the project will yield an extended film or something closer to a mini-series.

There is currently no timeline set for production, but HBO is currently courting production houses.

Snyder is currently in the post-production stage for his Netflix zombie film Army of The Dead, which is also set to premiere in 2021.
