Kiefer Sutherland seen out with girlfriend Cindy Vela for first time since he lost his mother Shirley Douglas, 86, to pneumonia

Kiefer Sutherland was glimpsed in Los Angeles this week in his first public sighting since his mother Shirley Douglas died aged 86 of pneumonia complications.

The 53-year-old actor and country singer appeared to be taking comfort in music as he was seen carrying his guitar down the street.

He could be spotted having a conversation with his actress girlfriend Cindy Vela, 41, whom he has been with since 2014.

Kiefer announced his mother’s death on Twitter on April 5, merely three days after the actress and activist turned 86.

‘Early this morning my mother, Shirley Douglas, passed away due to complications surrounding pneumonia (not related to COVID19),’ he wrote.

‘My mother was an extraordinary woman who led an extraordinary life. Sadly she had been battling for her health for quite some time and we, as a family, knew this day was coming,’ continued the 24 icon.

‘To any families who have lost loved ones unexpectedly to the Coronavirus, my heart breaks for you. Please stay safe.’

Shirley had Kiefer and his twins sister Rachel with her second husband Donald Sutherland, whom she was married to from 1966 to 1970.

As a screen actress she featured in such films as as David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers and Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the Vladimir Nabokov novel Lolita.

Shirley was regarded for her work on the stage, and she and Kiefer played the mother-son roles in Tennessee Williams’ play The Glass Menagerie.

She became an Officer Of The Order Of Canada in 2003 for contributions to the performing arts and also got into Canada’s Walk Of Fame. 

Like her children she came from famous parentage as the daughter of politician Tommy Douglas, who is known in Canada as the ‘Father Of Medicare.’

Along with Kiefer and Rachel, Shirley is survived by her son Thomas Emil Sicks by her first marriage to brewery heir Timothy Emil Sicks.
