Walt Disney’s ‘Technicolor Dream House’ goes on the market for $1m

A colorful home built for Walt Disney and his wife next to a golf course has emerged on the market.

The quirky property in Palm Springs, California, was built for the famous entrepreneur and animator in 1962 and became known as his ‘Technicolor Dream House’.

The single-storey house, which still has some original features from Disney’s time there, recently became available for $1.095m.

It is now under offer and the new unnamed owner is expected to complete the sale on May 14.

Michael Erives from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, who are selling the property, said the sale is expected to be a record price, but cannot reveal the figure until the sale is completed.

Walt Disney had the house built as a retreat for his later years in 1962 and lived there until his death in 1966.

The kitchen, complete with bar stools, white tiled flooring and one lilac painted wall. Walter's wife Lillian, who was 24 years his junior, remained there after his death, and it stayed in the Disney family until 2015 when it was sold to the current owner

The house has 2,443 sq ft of accommodation with an entrance hall with mirrored ceilings, a spacious living and dining room, a kitchen/breakfast room and four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms.

Outside it has a garden with carefully landscaped hedges, a pool and spa and a covered patio for al fresco dining.

It has views of the golf course and the mountains beyond.

The master bedroom still has the bed set from when Disney lived there and many of the mirrors in the house are also original and were hand-picked by Disney himself.

‘It’s set on the Indian Canyons golf course. Walt Disney played a lot on the course and even had a fountain built by the clubhouse – it’s 50ft tall and is still referred to as the Disney fountain.

‘The house looks over the second fairway of the north course.
