Two joyriders have wrecked a Range Rover in a horror car crash just moments after ‘using a cloned key to steal it’.

The suspected thieves smashed the £60,000 vehicle into a lamppost on Brighton Road in Purley, south London, at 3.30am on Monday.

They are suspected of nicking the car from nearby Smithams Down Road 15 minutes before the incident.

The alleged crooks are both understood to have escaped the crumpled wreckage uninjured.

Police arrested a man and later released him without charge and are seeking a second.

Pictures from the scene showed the Range Rover sliced in two, with its engine, bonnet and tyres all detached and lying near a Post Office and a bus stop.

CCTV footage showed the luxury car skidding down the road moments before it hit the lamppost.

A Met police spokesman said yesterday police had initially been called to the area to reports of a car burglary.

They added: ‘Two men were believed to be involved in the incident and remain outstanding. Enquiries continue to trace them.’

Brighton Road, A23, is a major trunk road connecting south Croydon to the M23, M25 and Brighton.
