‘I’ve been born and bred in the country’: Outback tradie Mat Garrick, 30, reveals the emotional reason he’s signed up to Big Brother Australia

Outback tradie Mat Garrick is set to star on the Big Brother Australia reboot.

The 30-year-old, who lives in Broken Hill in the far west of New South Wales, says he has signed up to the reality show on behalf of his small country town.

After locals have struggled with droughts in recent years, Mat wants to give them ‘a reason to smile’ by becoming a housemate.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Mat said: ‘Apart from challenging myself I really wanted to try to give the people of Broken Hill and surrounds something to tune into and hopefully give them a reason to smile for a little while.

‘It’s been a really tough time out here. The drought has hit us for six. So hopefully I can give them something to laugh at and forget what’s going on.’

Mining electrician Mat was born in Broken Hill and has lived there his entire life, praising the ‘big friendship network’ and ‘community spirit’ the town has.

‘I hope I’m a pretty likeable guy’: Mat says he won’t forget Big Brother is a game when he’s in the house, and anticipates people being ‘conniving and backstabbing’

Mat was officially announced as a housemate by Channel Seven on Sunday.

He said: ‘My beautiful fiancée Jess is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s a bit of a running joke that I’m Don Bradman and bat above my average with Jess.’

When asked how he’ll go in the house, Mat said: ‘I hope I’m a pretty likeable guy. Got to keep my wits about myself. Some people are conniving and backstabbing.

‘Others will genuinely be on your side. It’s a game, you’ve got to remember that. If someone’s coming after my back, it’s kill or be killed in my book. I’ll bring humour, wit, smart [remarks] and ADHD energy and a beautiful big head.’
