Kelly Clarkson delivers a stirring rendition of Madonna’s 1989 hit song Like A Prayer

Kelly Clarkson covered Madonna‘s smash hit 1989 single Like A Prayer for the latest edition of her ‘Kellyoke’ videos. 

With help from ‘virtual bandmates’ who video-conferenced in with their instruments the 38-year-old delivered a stirring rendition of the number.

In lieu of backup singers she used multiple recordings of herself, such that several Kellys appeared onscreen at once in an eerie flourish.

True to her own singing style the American Idol alumna added some belt notes and melismas that were not in the original Madonna version.

Previous ‘Kellyoke’ specials from home have included covers of Focus by H.E.R. and Vanishing By Mariah Carey.

She delivered a rendition of Sweet Music Man by Kenny Rogers on March 27 a week after the country music icon died of natural causes at 81.

‘Kellyoke’ was a fixture of The Kelly Clarkson Show even before its studio shoots were shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Her song choices have ranged from 9 To 5 by Dolly Parton and I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston to If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes.

When Madonna released the Like A Prayer single and music video in 1989 she caused a huge sensation and a scandal. 

Her music video, in which she gives herself stigmata and smooches a saint and in which the Ku Klux Klan burn a cross, caused a particular furor.

The controversy included a condemnation from the apoplectic Vatican, and Pope John Paul II pushed for another boycott.

Religious groups including the Vatican aimed their wrath at Pepsi as well, calling for a boycott of the company, for which Madonna had recently done an ad.

Pepsi ultimately pulled the commercial, which first aired during The Cosby Show to an estimated audience of 250 million across 40 countries.
