Self-employed workers missing out on support under Government’s coronavirus aid schemes

Hundreds of thousands of self-employed workers missing out on support under Government’s coronavirus aid scheme

Hundreds of thousands of self-employed workers are missing out on support under the Government’s coronavirus aid schemes.

The Self-Employment Income Support Scheme allows those who work for themselves to claim a grant of up to £2,500 per month – but only if they were trading for the entirety of the last tax year, from April 6, 2019.

Under pressure: The self-employed are only eligible for help if they were trading for the entirety of the last tax year

Data from the Office for National Statistics showed that this will exclude 151,000 people who became self-employed between April and December last year.

There are also likely to be thousands more who became self-employed since the beginning of 2020 who will also miss out.
