‘Banks only lend to those that don’t need the cash,’ says Antique furniture seller Claire McFadyen

Antique furniture seller Claire McFadyen had experienced her best two months of trading in six years of business before the coronavirus crisis struck.

Now the mother-of-two and her husband Jamie face an uncertain future after Barclays rejected their application for a £60,000 Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan (CBIL).

Tough talk: Antique furniture seller Claire McFadyen had experienced her best two months of trading in six years of business before the coronavirus crisis struck

The couple are behind Louise Grace Interiors in Banstead, Surrey. This year was expected to be their best in business, however her application for a CBIL with Barclays was rejected after they decided she could not afford the repayments.

She argues the loan repayments would be feasible, adding: ‘It seems they are only offering loans to businesses that don’t need the money.’

A Barclays spokesman said: ‘Unfortunately this business does not meet the lending criteria set out by the scheme.’
