Shopper pays nurse’s grocery bill and stranger raises £705 for nurse after her car was smashed

Two nurses have been amazed at the kindness showed by strangers as they battle coronavirus on the frontlines.

A shopper in Pontefract insisted on paying for a maternity-ward nurse’s groceries while in Sussex a stranger raised £705 for for an A&E nurse whose car was broken into while she was working.

Luke Welsh, 30, overheard maternity-ward nurse Isobelle Smithson, 24, talking to other customers about her job  and offered to pay for Isobelle’s £56.85 groceries at Featherstone Aldi in Pontefract, West Yorks.

After thieves broke into Emily Murphy’s car while she was working a 12-hour A&E shift stranger Adrian Martin raised £705 on a GoFundMe page.

When the maternity-ward nurse said that she could not accept the kind offer Luke put two £20 notes and one £10 in her trolley and walked away.

‘He said: ‘no it’s from me and my wife thank you for what you do’ I was absolutely hysterical,’ said Isobelle.

Emily got out of a 12-hour A&E shift at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex and found her driver seat’s window and her passenger seat’s window smashed with her coat and sunglasses stolen.

She posted about it on social media and Adrian set up a GoFundMe page raising £705 for her after mechanic Steve Coward drove 47 miles from Hastings, East Sussex, to fix her car for free.

‘You’re all incredible, never did I think writing my angry status last night I’d have ended up with the response I have had and the generosity of all of you,’ said Emily.

At Aldi Isobelle had told people in the queue that she was a nurse at Pinderfields General Hospital in Wakefield as her NHS card helped her to move further down the queue and get into the store quicker.

‘Something I felt like a right idiot doing but the queue was so big and I had my work card with me,’ said the mother-of-one.

Everybody was happy to oblige and helped Isobelle to move down the queue.

‘I apologised to all the people in the queue but they didn’t mind at all and everyone was so nice and asking where I worked and how it was at the moment,’ she said.

Just as Isobelle had finished her shopping Luke went up to her, handed her £50 and asked her to use it for the bill.

Isobelle said she could not accept it but Luke put the money in her trolley and walked away.

After her shift she found her car smashed up and posted about it on Facebook.

Emily said: ‘Get out from a 12.5 hour shift in A&E to this. I’m absolutely devastated, no words.

‘Let’s just hope I never have to be your nurse.’

‘There is no need to carry on donating you lovely people. I’ll be clapping for Adrian and all of you awesome guys every Thursday too.’
