Nissan mothballs UK biggest car plant: Sunderland factory employs some 6,000 workers

Nissan has mothballed the biggest car plant in the UK as the Covid-19 outbreak wreaks havoc.

Production at the giant factory in Sunderland, which employs around 6,000 workers, will be suspended indefinitely.

The world’s largest car maker Volkswagen also announced it would be shutting down plants in Spain, Portugal and Slovakia before the end of the week.

It comes a day after France’s PSA announced it would be temporarily mothballing Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port and Luton sites.

Car manufacturers are reeling from a slump in demand and it has become increasingly difficult to source key parts from other countries.

Workers in Sunderland, which makes the popular Qashqai, Juke and electric Leaf models, will continue to be paid.
