RIT CAPITAL PARTNERS: £2.8bn trust grows money over the long term, while preserving initial investments

At £2.8bn, RIT Capital Partners is one of the UK’s largest investment trusts

WHAT IS IT?

At £2.8billion, RIT Capital Partners is one of the UK’s largest investment trusts.

It grows savers’ money over the long term, while preserving their initial investment.

Formerly the Rothschild Investment Trust, it is managed by J Rothschild Capital Management and until last year counted founder Lord Rothschild, 83, as chairman.

WHAT DOES IT INVEST IN?

The portfolio is split across equity funds, special situations and listed companies’ shares.

This means it isn’t purely dependant on market-listed companies. It also invests in private firms, so the value may be more stable at times of market volatility.

Just under a third of the portfolio is in North America, while 21 per cent is in emerging markets and 9 per cent in the UK.

WHAT DO THE EXPERTS LIKE?

Graham Spooner, investment research analyst at The Share Centre, says: ‘The trust has an excellent long-term track record on delivering capital growth, allied to preserving shareholder capital from a diversified portfolio.’

ANY DOWNSIDES?

Spooner adds: ‘It is however worth noting performance could suffer in rising equity markets as a result of its defensive bias.’
