Hays Travel asks staff to take unpaid leave in bid to ease the pressure caused by coronavirus

Hays Travel is taking emergency measures to cut its costs after fears over the spread of Covid-19

Hays Travel, the company which rescued more than 400 Thomas Cook shops last year, has asked staff to take unpaid leave in a bid to ease the pressure caused by coronavirus.

The Sunderland-based travel operator, which has more than 5,000 employees, is taking emergency measures to cut its costs after fears over the spread of Covid-19 caused a huge slump in the holiday industry.

It has asked workers to take voluntary unpaid leave or reduce their hours, as thousands of customers have cancelled holiday plans due to fears they could catch coronavirus.

A spokesman said: ‘At this stage we are simply looking to cut non-essential expenditure and we are asking our colleagues if they wish to take voluntary leave or reduce their hours on a temporary basis.

‘We are reviewing the situation on a daily basis.’
