Upmarket grocer Booths fights off festive competition from the German discounters

Sales at upmarket grocer Booths rose over Christmas as it fought off intense competition from the German discounters.

The chain, known as the ‘Waitrose of the North’, said sales were 3.5 per cent higher in the three weeks to January 5 than in the same period a year ago.

The rise was down to strong demand for wine, festive food and premium ale, the company said.

Cracking Christmas: Upmarket grocer Booths, known as the ‘Waitrose of the North’, said sales were 3.5 per cent higher in the three weeks to January 5 than in the same period a year ago

The figures suggested Booths brushed off increased competition from German discounters Aldi and Lidl which have ramped up their presence in the North.

But Edwin Booth, chairman and chief executive of Booths, said: ‘Booths performed very well this Christmas.

‘At a time when customers shop at several retailers for Christmas, including discounters, they trust Booths for the centrepiece and all the trimmings.’

Booths said that a big portion of the rise in sales came from orders from its Booths Christmas Book.
