Barcelona boost for Yorkshire paving firm: Gaudi’s unfinished basilica to be completed using stone from UK quarry
Barcelona’s famous unfinished basilica, the Sagrada Familia, will be finished using stones from a Yorkshire paving company.
Rocks supplied by Marshalls Group from its Stanton Moor quarry in Derbyshire will be used on the main facade, known as the Glory Facade, of Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece.
The Sagrada Familia is Barcelona’s most popular attraction, with 3m visitors a year. It has been under construction since 1882.

Gaudi took over the project in 1883 and worked on it until his death in 1926. Just a quarter of it was completed when he died.
Marshalls said officials first visited its quarry in 2018 and have bought more than 1,000 tons of stone.
The firm dates back to 1890 and is famous for paving every location on the London Monopoly board. It has paved Trafalgar Square twice.
Chief executive Martyn Coffey said: ‘The team at Sagrada Familia are likely to start cutting the stone at the end of 2021, so it is a while until we will see it in situ, but it will be a very proud moment when we do.’
