Five out of the six High Street banks allow customers to bank cheques made out to their middle names

Current account holders can still bank cheques made out to their middle names in five out of the six High Street banks.

Lloyds and Nationwide allow customers to deposit a cheque made out using their middle name and surname, as long as their middle name is on their account.

Santander says the decision to accept a cheque which does not have the customer’s first name on the payee line is down to the branch manager. 

NatWest will carry out extra identification checks.

Barclays will consider it only if customers are known to staff or if they notified the bank when they opened the account.
